We recently shared an article for our aspiring models attending the Face of John Robert Powers Go-See on how to nail the perfect pose. Today, it’s all about how to walk on a runway! Follow these tips and tricks to transform yourself into a catwalk model and ensure you can strut your stuff on the runway.
Perfect your posture
Walking like a supermodel starts with good posture and balance. Roll your shoulders back and push your hips forward slightly, then try to imagine a tight piece of string being threaded from your spine through your head, this will ensure you stand up straight.
Zig Zag stride
The hardest part to grasp is the walk itself, but don’t overthink it. With your toes facing forward simply put one foot in front of the other then allow your hips to sway naturally. Take long elegant strides and keep your walk to a steady tempo as though you are walking to the beat of a song. Try to relax your arms by your side and let them swing naturally as you walk, making sure you don’t get distracted by your accessories.
Develop your signature walk
When you are walking in a fashion show with lots of other models strutting up and down the runway, you’ll want to make sure that you stand out from the crowd. No matter how great your walk is, confidence and a positive attitude are essential if you want to steal the show. Make sure you inject your personality into your performance, and connect with the audience. At the end of the day, practice makes perfect; be unique and embrace your quirks, because that’s what will set you apart from the rest!
Don’t forget about your face
Have you ever noticed that models’ eyes are always focused straight ahead at fashion shows? It’s important to lock your eyes on a spot at the end of the runway. Tilt your chin down a little at the end of the runway so the audience sees your eyes but make sure you don’t look down, as this can make you seem nervous and you need to be filled with confidence if you want to make an impact.
Strike a pose
The end of the runway is your chance to shine and strike a pose for photographers. It is the best time to show off the designer’s clothes to the audience but also a good opportunity for you to get photos to build up your portfolio. Don’t stand completely still; continue moving fluidly but pause for a brief 3-5 seconds while you pose. Then change position and hold it for the same amount of time before turning and strutting back.
In order to polish your catwalk skills, try walking around the house in heels. This will help you to get comfortable with the height and maintaining your balance. Ultimately, to succeed on the runway, you need to walk with purpose and personality!
